The Omnia, Zermatt
A super sleek and stylish mountain lodge

Perched up on the mountainside above the village of Zermatt, built on a giant rock, accessing The Omnia is a bit of an adventure. A courtesy electric car meets you at the station, whizzes you through the narrow streets of Zermatt, before entering a long tunnel at the end of which you are invited to step into an elevator. When the doors open 60 meters higher, you are transported into the sleek and stylish lobby of this stunning design hotel where rooms have no numbers.
This is a modern, minimalist mountain lodge where ostentation has no place. It offers guests front row seats on the village of Zermatt and the Matterhorn beyond. Designed by the NY-based architect Ali Tayar, the hotel was built using dark granite, lightwood and lots of glass materials and is furnished with sleek, Scandinavian inspired fittings and furnishings. The décor is all about clean lines.

The Omnia only has 30 rooms, including 12 spacious suites, most with their own private balcony with views either on the Matterhorn or the village below. The rooms are uncluttered, with minimalistic furniture. The hotel beds have memory-foam mattresses and linens are all of outstanding quality. All the bathrooms are sleek and modern and I am happy to report that the towels definitely rate a 9 on my soft and fluffy towel index!

The tower suites, built in the hotel’s circular turret are stunning. They offer a living room housed in the turret, with large sofas, a fireplace and a telescope and floor-to-ceiling windows to ensure that you fully enjoy the fabulous views on the Matterhorn and the village. I was told that at dawn, during the climbing season, you could see the trail of lights of the climbers making their ascent of the Matterhorn thanks to the telescope. The standout feature has got to be the beautiful handcrafted wooden bathtub in the Matterhorn suite.
Just behind the lobby, beyond the fireplace, is a library with an eclectic collection of art books and a very well stocked whiskey cabinet. You can choose from over 100 bottles of American bourbon, Irish and Scottish whiskeys. The whisky theme is continued into the rooms where guests can find a complimentary bottle of bourbon on a tray with two glasses.
For a hotel with 30 rooms, the spa is a real surprise. It offers: two massage rooms, an indoor/outdoor pool and an outdoor hot tub with direct views on the Matterhorn. The wet area has a vast choice of steam rooms: a flower room, a caldarium room, a traditional Turkish bath as well as a Finnish sauna. Everything you need to loosen up your muscles after a day of hiking or skiing! There is also a fitness studio and private yoga lessons can be arranged.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, The Omnia also has a Michelin-starred restaurant where once again you’ll be surprised by the stylish, sleek and minimalistic décor. I am told the food is outstanding.
