7 places to see on the Montreux Riviera
The Montreux Riviera on the shores of Lake Geneva stretches from Vevey to Montreux and is in my (perhaps biased) opinion one of the most beautiful parts of Switzerland. On my last visit to the Montreux Riviera, I was lucky enough to visit the region on an e-bike tour with YouMo. A local guide accompanied us on our fantastic tour which started in Vevey and took us all the way to the Château de Chillon and back. Here you will find some of the highlights of our tour, as well as suggestions of other places to visit in this lovely region.
Top seven things to do in Lucerne
Lucerne lies at the heart of central Switzerland. With its picturesque wooden bridge, its baroque Jesuit church and its pretty painted houses, it is a major Swiss tourist attraction. It is also a great base for discovering some of Switzerland's stunning mountain panoramas, including Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus, and for taking a steamship cruise on Lake Lucerne.
Discover Interlaken and its region
Interlaken is a very popular Swiss holiday destination, located between the beautiful emerald lakes of Thun and Brienz. From the town center, you have the most incredible views on the majestic Jungfrau towering above. Today it has become a very popular destination for adventure-seeking holiday makers as it offers a fantastic range of activities, from paragliding to canonying. I am happy to share below some of the most spectacular places to see and fun things to do in this beautiful part of the Bernese highlands.
8 places to visit in Ticino, Switzerland
Ticino is the southern-most Canton of Switzerland and (almost) exclusively Italian-speaking. It benefits from a very enjoyable Mediterranean micro-climate and is a place of great natural beauty with its numerous lakes and stunning valleys. It's all about charming old-stone villages, palm trees, stunning views and colourful piazzas. It has all the charm of Italy, yet offers all the benefits of Swiss efficiency and cleanliness. Here are some of the beautiful places I visited and would really recommend seeing on your next visit to Ticino!
Climbing the Breithorn
If you are visiting Zermatt in the summer and you would like to experience your first high alpine adventure, then you might consider climbing the Breithorn. The Breithorn (4164 metres) is a beautiful glaciered mountain crest that is considered to be one of the easiest 4000m peaks to climb in the Swiss Alps. It is, technically, an easy hike, but you do need a good level of fitness and should be an experienced hiker to take on this challenge, accompanied by an official guide. The views from the top are exceptional!
Five top activities in Verbier: A guide for non-skiers
Sitting on a sunny terrace at 1500m, Verbier is best known for its fantastic skiing offering challenging ski runs both on and off-piste. As I discovered during my children's last school holiday, when we spent a week in Verbier, it also offers a number of activities for non-skiers. Read on to find out more!
The non-skier's guide to Zermatt in winter
Ever since the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 and the opening of the Gornergrat cogwheel train in 1898, Zermatt has been a favourite destination in the Swiss Alps. This year again, The New York Times listed it as one of 52 destinations to go in 2017. If you are not a skier, don’t worry there is plenty to keep you busy in Zermatt in the winter, as I discovered on my last trip there this January. I actually ran out of time and wasn’t able to cover all the options on offer during my four-day visit. Here are some of the activities I discovered.
A cosy, traditional festive event in Lucerne
Switzerland has a long-tradition of Christmas markets: most towns have a lovely outdoor market during the festive season. Basel and Montreux have the best-known and largest events, with Montreux attracting over half-a-million visitors each year. I checked out Lucerne's Christmas market for you on the day it opened, December 3rd.
